Flight camp is a three-week journey into the world of aviation! We learn about fixed-wing and drone aerodynamics through hands-on activities, including paper airplane designs inspired by the renowned “Paper Airplane Guy,” Jay Collins. Campers craft their own RC planes, guided by designs from FliteTest, while honing their flying skills using an RCFlight simulator and indoor drones. We study Vijay Kumar’s groundbreaking work in quadcopters and take to the skies with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro. Campers spend time outdoors piloting large drones, and taking aerial footage of their own RC creations in action.
Throughout the camp, we learn essential knowledge such as LiPo battery management, RC electronics, flight safety, and the importance of adhering to drone registration and regulations, to prepare campers for responsible and informed flying. The highlight comes at the end of the session where we visit a local airport to meet dedicated pilots from the Young Eagles program. Campers experience a flight safety check and get an opportunity to fly in the cockpit alongside a pilot, creating lasting memories that will potentially foster further learning in the field of aeronautics and flight. This program is designed for campers entering grades 6-9 in the fall. First session date is June 28 to July 18. The second session is July 19 to August 8.
